If you want to delve into American democracy, spend some time at the U.S. Capitol. Free, same-day tour passes are available on a limited basis and tours include the Crypt, Rotunda and National Statuary Hall. Be sure and have your tour guide show you the “whisper spot” in the Rotunda, where the acoustics are such that you can hear a quiet conversation from across the large room!

Find rare flora and fauna

 100 Maryland Avenue SW It was actually part of George Washington’s vision to include an educational botanic garden in the nation’s capital, and that dream came true when Congress established the U.S. Botanic Garden in 1820. One of the oldest botanic gardens in North America, the free attraction features a diversity of rooms, including a rain forest, a butterfly garden and a rose garden.
